The Ultimate, Accessible Boomer Cottage

The Ultimate Accessible Cottage designed by William Edward Summers for online design firm easybuildingplans.com has just been released. It was created to be the ideal small retirement house for someone who needs or may need accessibility in the future yet wants to have room for guests, rental potential, a caretakers studio, hobbies and storage. Take a look at the floor plan:

The house has one large bedroom, one guest bedroom or office, three bathrooms, a fully self-contained caretaker’s or rental studio, a large front porch and an oversized single car garage with storage and shop space. The main dwelling area is 1355 square feet, including the office/bonus room, and the studio is 320 square feet. In addition to this there is a finished standing height attic with a permanent access stairway from the garage. The attic could easily be converted to an apartment because the plumbing would be stacked above the powder room and laundry below.

The stairs to the attic are the only steps in the house. It is possible to go in from the garage or front door without any steps. The primary living area is fully accessible with a five foot wheelchair turning radius in the bathroom, a wheel-in shower, and a wide open kitchen.

Since the cottage is built on a slab foundation it is possible to have radiant in-floor heating throughout the house and studio. Additionally there is ample space for the crackling warm fire of a wood burning stove. If gas is available that would be another option for heating and cooking.

The concept of The Ultimate Accessible Cottage is to have an affordable house with the flexibility to go from active pre-retirement with hobbies, guests and an income unit to fully accessible with no decrease in lifestyle.
